I am very disapointed with episode 34, Archer, it basically shows that you and a your group have very single sided view of the CG industry as a whole. Your assesment of the CG Retrospective showed that unless you personally use the software or the news impacted YOU, you cared, but if it didnt have anything to do with you (anything mac for example) you "weren't impressed". It just shows your ignorance of the overall industry. How are you ignorant? I'll give you some examples, Shake 4.1, couldnt care didnt know what shake was??? Do you not pay attention to what people are working on? Shake is one of the best compositing apps that in recent years has take a large dominance in the market. After Effects which you prefer is a good program too, but to not care about an app because your bias to another? Intel Mac, have you done any research on that, that was a revolution for the mac world (and I am a PC user) but because you dislike macs it gets a passed by. Have you seen the new release of Vista? Its not exactly geared toward CG artist anymore, with big RAM usages, horrible OpenGL.... dont get me wrong Vista is cool for what it is, but not for CG artist. Eventually the section industry that uses windows will be switching to linux or mac unless big changes happen with Vista service packs, because 64bit computing is the way of the future, and if you dont have a 64 bit Operating System you cant take advantage of it, therefore the industry will make a switch, probably to linux but with the huge performance increase in OSX from having intel chips, I wouldnt be suprised if macs became the standard. It may not concern you being a 3ds max user, but Autodesk has been porting alot of the programs to linux, I shutter to think of max being on Vista as it is now.

My point is to get you to open your mind. Archer, you had a great idea on CGcast and some of your earlier shows showed it, The last 15 or so with some notable exceptions, have been you and your friends giving biased uninformed assesments of the industry, and it goes much beyond just expressing your opinions. With an open mind it will help you as an artist, close it off and your ability to adapt to a changing environment is severely diminished and hinders your use in the industry. Check out www.fxguide.com for example of good podcasts (though about post production and finishing). Archer there really isnt anyone else doing a CGcast about the 3d/2d digital art world, and as I have said before you have the potential to make this show great, I hope you take my thoughts into consideration.

Not true, what I meant was that new versions of the apps are released every year, so It's nothing special, if something was worth the time to go on the CG retrospective, it would be some amazing feature that one of the program does and the others do not.

(anything mac for example) you "weren't impressed".

    I use a Mac everyday so I don't hate it ;)

I know what shake is but never used it, plus it's "motion" now

I don't dislike Macs, I use one everyday, but still im not impressed, it uses a new processor and can run windows now, but still has has some problems with rosetta emulation for some adobe programs.

I've tried Vista, but not for anything CG, I haven't told anyone to jump ship to vista. XP is still good and has no issues.

We'll see in the future, since only time will tell.

Let me get a few things straight, as far CG Retro goes, I personally agree with you... the yearly releases of software are typical and therefore unless big changes are there I dont think they are worth discussing. Also you have stated on your show that you dislike macs, In which I based my assesment of your dislike... from your words. It doesnt bother me that you do or do not like macs but the changes were significant, and concerning rosetta and adobe products, well UBs are comming out now and the CS3 Beta on UB is very promising. And again without signifigant changes in microsoft thinking it could be the work horse of the industry later on.

Also Shake is not motion now... they are two complimentary apps but Motion is geared toward the Graphic Design composites, Shake though discontinued at 4.1 is the last of Apple's current generation of compositing tools and they are stopping development to concentrate on a better version of Shake... so basically intend to not do what others do like keep adding version numbers and small features and bug fixes to a architecture that could be re written to be more.

In regards to windows, XP is still great... but eventually it will be unsupported... so it may be wise that all of us... myself included change our views toward other technology. As it is in this industry if we do not stay current with the technology as well with the art we get obsolete pretty quickly.

But again im not trying to be an ass, Im not trying to be one of your hate mailers... I did catch that part of the show later. You have had great shows in the past... though I wont comment of the video cast since they werent really subjects I cared for. Your show has the potential to be a source of good information... especially for students, a number I know have listened to your casts when I was finishing up school. I just thing that your information should be informed.

PS I wouldn't mind comming on the show to talk to you about these or other things, I live in Arizona in the US so I dont know what time it would be when you record it but I am open to trying.
